SIBU, May 10: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will organise a Gawai Dayak Bazaar at Taman Tasik Permai from May 13 to 22.
Organising committee chairman Councilor Sammy Ngelambai said today said that the 10-day bazaar will operate from 2pm to 10pm daily.
“We invite the public to come to our bazaar as this is the first time the bazaar is organised by the SMC a little bit far from the town centre. Normally such activity will take place at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase II,” he added.
Sammy said several Dayak non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will also be involved in the running of the bazaar.
These includes Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu, Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS), Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), Orang Ulu National Association (OUNA), Punan National Association (PNA) and Sarawak Dayak Youth Organisation (Pebedas).
Sammy revealed a total of 16 stalls will be set up in conjunction with the bazaar to sell various items such as souvenirs, handicrafts, food, beverages, and so on.
“The bazaar will be enlivened with entertainment items such as street music performances or ‘busking’ and so on. We request visitors to always adhere to standard operating procedures (SOP) and provide cooperation to our committee,” he said.
Meanwhile, a ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) to clean the bazaar site was conducted by the SMC with representatives of the Dayak NGOs on Sunday (May 8).
The ‘gotong-royong’ was led by Sammy himself along with Councilor Augustine Merican. — DayakDaily
