SIBU, March 12: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will pay for the damage of the car that was badly dented by a fallen tree during the tropical storm that hit the town this afternoon.
The thunderstorm which brought about heavy rain, lightning and strong winds started at about 4.55pm and ended at about 6.05pm.
The more-than-one-hour heavy rain also caused many low-lying areas to be hit by flash flood.
A tree at the Town Square was uprooted by the strong winds and unfortunately landed on a Honda City car which was parked near it, causing serious damage to the car roof. The photo of the fallen tree on the dented car has gone viral in the town.
SMC chairman, Clarence Ting when contacted said the council would bear responsibility for the damages.
“The owner of the car can file for damages with us and our insurance company will handle the claim. This is normally the standard way when such a thing happened,” he said
Ting said the council had given instruction to trim tall trees in its jurisdiction as they pose a hazard to the public.
“There are many areas with tall trees and we have asked people to cut them to make them shorter,” he added -DayakDaily
