SMC exploring proposal to relocate Sibu Night Market to Jalan Khoo Peng Loong

It has been proposed the Sibu Night Market be relocated to Jalan Khoo Peng Loong (seen in photo).

SIBU, May 25: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is looking into moving the Sibu Night Market at Jalan Cross to the riverfront in Jalan Khoo Peng Loong.

Among the reasons for the relocation are that the existing site is too congested for the market’s 190-odd traders and that there is no public toilet facility nearby.

“I strongly propose that Jalan Khoo Peng Loong be the new site for the market as the area is wider. The Sibu-Kapit Expressboat Terminal is hardly used now due to the decreasing express boat services.

“After all, the area is also quite quiet at night. With the new location of the Sibu Night Market site, it will ‘revive’ the area,” said Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Markets and Petty Traders Committee deputy chairman Councilor Augustine Merikan at the council’s full board meeting here today.

He added that night market traders and customers could use the toilet facility of the Khoo Peng Loong Food Court.

“When the market was moved there (Jalan Khoo Peng Loong) it had public toilet facilities located nearby. Besides, that the new site located on the river bank presents a good view,” he said.

In order to realise the proposal, Augustine said that the council will hold a meeting with the Sibu Night Market vendors in June.

“I hope the council can consider this proposal and also hope the hawkers will agree to our proposal.

“However, the proposed relocation of the Sibu Night Market site is subject to the agreement of the hawkers and the council,” he added.

He also disclosed his committee will conduct a more in-depth study to take into account various viewsnand factors. — DayakDaily
