KUCHING, July 9: A new smart traffic light system worth over RM2 million will be installed at the Jalan Wawasan-Jalan Setia 2 four-way junction in Mukah by this November, in a proactive step by the Sarawak government to improve safety at what has long been identified as a high-risk accident-prone spot.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said the project, funded under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), is aimed at addressing frequent traffic incidents at the junction, including many minor accidents that often go unreported but still pose serious danger to road users.

“This junction is known as a black spot with many recorded and unrecorded accidents. Even if most are minor, they still endanger lives,” he told reporters after symbolically handing over the project site to the contractor today, as reported by TVS.

He added that the smart traffic light system will be complemented by supporting infrastructure works including drain construction, road upgrades, and utility adjustments such as the relocation of power poles to ensure smooth project implementation.

Royston shared that the proposal for this upgrade had been submitted earlier and was positively received by the government, leading to the project’s approval.

“I’m glad our request was approved and hope the construction progresses smoothly,” he said.

In the meantime, he also reminded motorists to remain cautious and follow safety instructions when using the alternative route during the construction period.

“We want everyone to benefit from this project, Mukah residents and road users passing through alike,” he added. — DayakDaily
