KUCHING, July 2: The public toilet at Padungan Garden is set to undergo immediate upgrading under the BP1 allocation as part of Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) push to improve public infrastructure in support of tourism, heritage, and sustainable urban development.

According to a statement, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who officiated the site handover ceremony, said that although the project may seem minor, it plays a significant role in enhancing Padungan’s image as a tourist-friendly and sustainable destination.

“This toilet upgrading project may seem small, but it plays a big role in elevating Padungan’s image,” he said, adding that the Council is committed to upgrading infrastructure in a way that preserves heritage while supporting future growth.

Present during the handover were MBKS Deputy Mayor Dato Zaeidi Suhaili, Councillors Cr Chai Ju Long, Cr Judy Kho, Cr Eric Tay Tze Kok, and senior officers from MBKS.

The upgrading works are scheduled to begin immediately.

The public toilet, located in the heart of historic Padungan—one of Kuching’s oldest neighbourhoods with a heritage of over 100 years—caters to visitors exploring the iconic area, including the white cat statue, a popular photo spot among tourists.

In recent years, Padungan has seen a boom in gastronomy outlets, reflecting Kuching’s unique culinary identity under its designation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for Gastronomy.

Efforts are underway to ensure public spaces and infrastructure align with this branding by offering clean, accessible, and well-maintained amenities to enhance visitor experience.

This initiative also reflects MBKS’ broader vision of building a liveable, inclusive, and environmentally-conscious city that delivers quality services, especially in areas of high historical and tourism value. — DayakDaily
