MIRI, Feb 24: It was an exciting and fun day-long competition for 300 students from eight secondary schools here as they pitted their skills in fire safety, rescue work and fitness against each other.
The event ended yesterday evening at Lopeng fire station, where SM Sains Miri was crowned overall Cadet Bomba champion for Miri Zone. SMK Bekenu came in second and SMK Merbau third.
In last year’s competition, the winner was SMK Merbau, SMK Lutong was first runner-up and SM Sains Miri was second runner-up.
Other schools that took part in this year’s duel are SMK Lutong, SMK Agama Miri, SMK Tinjar, SMK Baru Miri and SMK Pujut.
The competition aimed to equip the participants with knowledge of emergency medical services, fire safety training and also interactions with their peers.
The friendly contest was divided into four categories: marching, ‘Aspec’ challenge, knot and tying challenge, and quizzes for boys, girls and in mixed categories.
This programme also aimed to select participants to represent Miri division at the state-level competition.
Miri Fire Zone 6 chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, in his remarks at the closing ceremony, said he strongly believed this initiative, a joint effort by Bomba Miri and the District Education Department, could nurture and enhance students’ interest in fire safety skills.
He told those present that the programme started 10 years ago, and students’ interest in it had blossomed, based on the number of schools taking part annually. — DayakDaily
