KUCHING, Oct 16: SK Nanga Meluan emerged champion at the inaugural Sarawak-level Kids’ Athletics Championship 2022 at SMK St Thomas here yesterday.
Meanwhile, SK Selapong and SJK Chung Hua Stapok secured second and third places, respectively.
According to a press release, the championships was organised by the Sarawak Athletics Association under the auspices of the Malaysian Athletics Union (KOM) and World Athletics.
Seven primary schools participated in the championships, namely, SJK Chung Hua Stapok (Padawan), SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa (Padawan), SJK Chung Hua Bako (Samarahan), SK Selapong (Sri Aman), SK Nanga Meluan (Julau), SJK Pangkalan Bedup (Serian), and SJK Chung Hua Kim Choo Seng (Padawan).
The young athletes competed in six event categories, namely Sprint/Hurdles Shuttle Relay, Long Jump with a Pole, Cross Hop, Overhead Backward Throw, Formula One and 8-Minute Endurance Race.
According to Sarawak State Education Department (JPN) deputy director for Student Development Section, Dicken Kilue, teachers should follow suit in initiating the early involvement of students in sports events.
“Through participation in this kind of encouragement programme, the talent of these students could be polished to represent the school, division, or State for athletic events at a higher level.
“Efforts would be intensified to encourage Kids’ Athletics and train more teachers to support this initiative as it will bring many benefits to those involved,” he said when officiating at the championships. — DayakDaily
