KUCHING, Oct 30: Safety railings have been installed along the deep roadside drain near SJK Sungai Apong, providing a protective barrier for pupils and parents using the area as they arrive at and leave school.

According to a press release, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) funded the project after a site visit by MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Councillor Chai Ju Loon, and an MBKS officer to assess safety concerns around the school.

During the visit, the unprotected drain was identified as a potential danger to pupils, particularly during heavy rain when water levels rise.

The absence of railings raised concerns over children accidentally falling into the drain.

“Children’s safety must always come first. When we identify a hazard, we must take action to reduce the risk before an accident happens,” he said.

The improvement forms part of MBKS’s ongoing efforts under Unicef’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) to create safer school surroundings and ensure that children’s safety is considered in public infrastructure improvements. — DayakDaily
