KUCHING, Nov 8: A pair of primary school students from SJK (C) Chung Hua No 4 Kuching emerged as champions at the Junior Innovate 2022 competition with their recycling project that focuses on the identification and categorisation of waste generators.
According to a press release, the top prize was awarded to Solomon Goh Kian Ping (11) and his partner, Brian Ho Leon Zin (11), both from SJK (C) Chung Hua No 4 Kuching, and it is the duo’s first victory as champion after two years in the competition.
Meanwhile, the other winners include the 1st Runner Up: ‘Forever United’ from SJK (C) Chung Hua Krokop, Miri, Sabah, with their game in waste management, the 2nd Runner Up: ‘FS Creative Creator’ from SJK (C) Shang Wu & SJK (C) Kwang Hwa, Pulau Pinang with their game on recycling, and the 3rd Runner Up: ‘Futuristic Team’ from Sk Tg Batu Keramat, Sabah, with their game on flood management.
On Nov 4, 15 finalists from over 300 teams competed in the final leg of the Junior Innovate 2022 National Level competition.
This year’s competition began in early April with 1,085 students and 346 teachers from 250 primary schools across Malaysia.
This year’s theme, ‘A Game for Change – Vision Towards a Wonderful Malaysia’ inspired students as young as nine to invent games that reflected their home country, Malaysia, through inventive use of the microcontroller’s input and output and exciting gameplay.
Of the 250 participating primary schools, 108 are from rural schools with more than 40 per cent female student participants.
The 15 Junior Innovate 2022 national finalists gathered and showcased at the Plaza Merdeka in conjunction with Tech Fiesta, to compete for the top six positions and for the Junior Innovate 2022 National Final Champion title.
The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak and the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) are the national hosts for the competition, and the competition is supported by MEITD Sarawak and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).
SDEC chief executive officer (CEO) Sudarnoto Osman in his speech highlighted that high impact programmes like Junior Innovate “add value to the education journey of our young minds and be lauded and promoted from both state level, national level and beyond the country.”
Present at the event are Marjolyn Anak Michael representing the Sarawak State Education Department, MEITD Sarawak principal assistant secretary Donald Henry Nohed, SDEC head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hazwan Razak, Chumbaka heads of schools principal consultant Dr Chew Yen Seng, and the top 15 celebrated finalists. — DayakDaily
