KUCHING, Nov 20: Lim Zhen Xian, a student of SJK Chung Hua No 3, has been announced as the winner of the Kuching South Child Council (KSCC) Logo Design and Slogan Competition, held in conjunction with World Children’s Day 2024.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, unveiled Lim’s winning design and slogan, which will now symbolise KSCC’s mission of fostering a child-friendly Kuching where young voices contribute to shaping the city’s development.

“Lim’s achievement earned him RM1,000 in prize money, while the first runner-up, Fiorentina Rani Japang, and the second runner-up, Foo Sik Siang Ai, both from SMK Padungan, won RM700 and RM500 respectively,” Wee announced during the launch of the official KSCC logo at the MBKS Committee Room today.

Wee emphasised that the competition not only marked World Children’s Day 2024, celebrated annually on Nov 20, but also served as an initiative to engage young talents in creating a unique identity for KSCC.

The event, held from Nov 8 to 16, attracted over 140 entries from primary and secondary school students in the Kuching South area.

Participants were tasked with designing logos incorporating key elements, including Kuching South’s official flower, the Canna Lily, MBKS’s corporate colors (blue, yellow, white, and red), and a cat symbolising Kuching City.

“They also crafted English slogans reflecting KSCC’s mission to empower young voices, promote inclusivity, and champion sustainability and cultural diversity,” Wee said.

Since its establishment in August 2024, KSCC has provided its young members, known as Child Councillors, with opportunities to engage in impactful initiatives.

“These activities have included interviewing leaders during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), participating in the International Youth Leadership Camp 2024 in Petaling Jaya, and traveling to Quanzhou for a Winter Camp,” he added.

Wee also highlighted the involvement of KSCC members in UNICEF and TVS’s Kids Takeover Media Project, celebrating World Children’s Day.

“This program empowers children to take over TV segments, read news, interview leaders, and gain hands-on experience in journalism and TV production,” Wee explained, underscoring KSCC’s dedication to amplifying young voices and fostering active participation in the community.

The ceremony was also attended by MBKS deputy mayor, Dato Zaiedi Suhaili. — DayakDaily
