KUCHING, Oct 29: Improvements to the walkway, waiting areas and drainage facilities at SJK Bintawa have been completed, providing students with a safer and more comfortable school environment.

The works followed an earlier visit by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, who inspected the school compound alongside the principal, teachers and students to identify facilities requiring repairs.

During the visit, the principal highlighted several concerns, including a leaking walkway roof, insufficient shelter at waiting areas and damaged drain covers that could pose safety risks to students.

Following the inspection, support was secured from three sponsors to carry out the necessary improvement works.

The completed works included repairing the leaking roof, extending the roof shelter over the walkway and waiting areas, and replacing damaged drain covers within the school compound.

Wee said the improvements addressed concerns raised by the school during his visit and underscored the importance of ensuring that facilities used by children daily are safe and well maintained.

“Walking around the school with the principal, teachers and students allowed me to see the conditions and hear their concerns directly. The principal pointed out the repairs needed, including the leaking roof and damaged drain covers.

“These are areas the children use every day, so it was important to follow up and get the works done,” he said in a media release today.

He added that the improvements were in line with MBKS’ Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), which places children’s safety and well-being at the centre of efforts to improve their everyday surroundings.

“Making a city child-friendly also means looking closely at the places where children spend their time. Safety checks within school compounds help identify problems, while listening to teachers and students helps us understand what needs attention,” he said.

Wee also expressed his appreciation to the three sponsors whose contributions made the improvements possible.

Amcan sponsored the roofing materials, while Tay Motor Sdn Bhd sponsored the drain covers. Wan Li Wan Welding Works provided the workmanship, installation and painting.

“We appreciate the support of all three sponsors. Their contributions have helped address the concerns raised by the school and provide a safer, more comfortable environment for the students,” he said. — DayakDaily
