Six workers escape unscathed in plantation-owned laboratory fire

KUCHING, Dec 10: Laboratory officers unharmed after a fire broke out at Sarawak Plantation SP LAB Chemistry laboratory in Jalan Sultan Tengah, this afternoon.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue (Bomba) department in a statement said they received the report regarding the incident at 2.24 pm.

“Operation commander reported that the incident was caused by experimental materials in the laboratory, which is hazardous, involving Sulfuric Acid and Hydrochloric Acid chemical, and was put out by using eight units of dry powder fire extinguisher.


“Following that, a “Termination and Isolation” work was conducted by hazardous material (Hazmat) Unit, in order to reduce and normalise the chemical hazardous level,” it said.

The statement noted, a total of six laboratory workers who were in the lab managed to escape without injury, and the lab was about 70 percent destroyed.

Three fire stations, namely Petra Jaya, Tabuan Jaya and Padungan, were involved in the operation, together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco) personnel. -DayakDaily
