KUCHING, Sept 3: A 25-year-old man suffering from mental health issues, who barged into St Joseph’s Cathedral in March and disrupted a church service by blasting loud music, throwing a liquor bottle, and yelling abusive words, was today ordered by the Magistrate’s Court here to sign a six-month good behaviour bond.
He stood before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan, who imposed the order under Section 67 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The incident unfolded on March 8 at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg, causing panic among churchgoers who immediately alerted police.
It was later confirmed that his mental health struggles dated back to 2021 after his mother’s passing from cancer. He was believed to have stopped taking his prescribed medication prior to the incident.
The court imposed a RM2,500 surety for the bond, guaranteed by his father, as a preventive step.
Prosecution was handled by Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the man did not have legal representation. — DayakDaily
