The five new community leaders are Low Muong Ing, 57, for Jalan Au Yong, Tiang Nie Ping,59, (Jalan Kandis and Jalan Diong Kik), Nee Nga Leh, 60, (Sungai Merah), Yong Ing Kai, 69 (Jalan Gambir) and Tieng Mee An, 51 (Nan San).

Ling Swee Hing,63, was re-appointed as Kapitan for the Brooke Drive area.

Speaking at the presentation of the letters of appointment today, Pelawan assemblyman, Michael Tiang said he had expectations for the six Kapitans.

“Community leaders are very important as they are the backbone of community service representing the government of the day which is GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak). There is a great expectation on their shoulders especially when GPS had in the last State election won a big mandate from the people,” he said.

As for his expectations for them, he wanted them to serve everyone in the constituency regardless of their race, religion and social background.

“Whoever comes to you, you will have to tend to them. I have always told my service centre (staff) that they have to serve everyone as they need help. Of course there are always certain issues such as private disputes for which we are not able to help much. We need to ask them to seek professional help,” he said.

Tiang also wanted the kapitans to serve round the clock, as there will always be people who will look for them at any time of the day.

“The government has so many policies. Thus you will need to update yourself and equip yourself with vital knowledge. There will be people such as certain Chinese who do not understand English and Bahasa Malaysia. Your role is to explain to them government policies in their language,” he said.

The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government II, also wanted the kapitans to show leadership by example and to take self-initiative.

Among those present at the ceremony were Sibu Resident Wong Hie Sieng and a Chinese community leader, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau. ā€” DayakDaily
