KUCHING, April 4: The site selection for a bridge between Sibu’s west bank and the town centre is currently in the final stage, says Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Sarawak Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Dr Annuar said several sites have been identified, but the final selection of the project site needs to be in a strategic location.
“So far, there have been proposals. First, regarding the site because we need to know if building a bridge ‘landing’ is important. The Public Works Department (JKR) has proposed several locations, and it is now in the final stage.
“This is important because we see that some locations are not suitable as they require a long ‘landing.’ That is something we need to look into first. However, the bridge will still be built,” said the Nangka assemblyman.
He said this to reporters during Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s visit to his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at his residence in Sibu today.
Accompanying the Premier were Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
On Feb 17, Abang Johari said that a taskforce committee has been formed to study the feasibility of a 400-metre bridge across Igan River, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Sibu’s west bank and the town centre.
Abang Johari added that the bridge would spur economic growth and unlock the potential of Sibu’s hinterland.
Meanwhile, Dr Annuar said that among the discussions he had with the Premier during the visit was regarding the annual stipend of RM15,000 for students from low-income households.
“We will look into how we can help with housing rentals for students. This is important for students so that they are more comfortable, especially those living off-campus,” he explained.
In addition, he mentioned that the proposal to build a hostel at the Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) is complete.
“The Sarawak Premier has asked me to submit this proposal as soon as possible so that we can provide accommodation for the students,” he added. — DayakDaily
