KUCHING, Nov 28: The proposal to preserve the old police station building in Siniawan, which has been established for nearly a century, and turn it into a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) museum, is still in the discussion and evaluation stages.
According to Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, the ministry—together with the cooperation of other agencies—will study the best ways to preserve the building, as well as look into its potential as a tourist attraction.
He said this during the question-and-answer session in response to Serembu assemblyman Dato Miro Simuh at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.
Meanwhile, in answering a supplementary question on whether the old Siniawan police building will be gazetted as a historical building, Snowdan reiterated the State government’s commitment to identifying old buildings with historical value to be gazetted under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019, which also includes the old police complex.
“Based on the ordinance, a building can be considered for gazettement if it was constructed before 1940 and has significant historical value.
“Any proposal to gazette a building like the old Siniawan police station under the ordinance needs a thorough and comprehensive evaluation process involving various stakeholders,” he said.
In May 2023, it was reported that the old police station building in Siniawan will be turned into a PDRM museum. — DayakDaily
