KUCHING, Jan 27: Sarawak’s single water entity, aimed at consolidating water management across the State, is expected to begin operations in the second quarter of this year.

Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the entity, approved by the Sarawak Cabinet in 2024, will unify operations currently managed by Kuching Water Board (KWB), Sibu Water Board (SWB), and Laku Management Sdn Bhd into one centralised body.

“We are currently fine-tuning the operational model, including aspects such as organisational structure, human resources, and salary schemes,” he said when delivering his ministerial address at a ceremony held at Waterfront Hotel here today.

He assured that the transition would not disrupt the current water supply to consumers, emphasising that the welfare of employees in the agencies involved would be a top priority.

“This restructuring will consider every aspect, including the well-being of staff, to ensure a smooth integration and continued efficient service to the public,” he added.

The move is part of Sarawak’s efforts to streamline and strengthen the State’s water supply management for greater efficiency and sustainability.

During the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) session last November, Julaihi announced that the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) will not be included in the single water entity initiative.

It will remain a separate entity focused on providing water supply infrastructure in rural areas but is expected to be integrated into the single water entity in the future. – DayakDaily
