KUCHING, Dec 4: Singapore is going to build a Consulate Office in Kuching, a development warmly welcomed by Sarawak, which sees it as a step to strengthen trade and diplomatic ties with the republic.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak has long enjoyed robust trade relations with Singapore.
“Singapore’s relationship with Malaysia is very close, and we also have extensive trade links between Sarawak and Singapore. I therefore welcome this initiative,” he said during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Singapore today, as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS).
The announcement came during a press conference following the 12th Malaysia–Singapore Leaders Retreat (ALR), where Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed his government’s plan to establish the Consulate Office in Kuching.
Abang Johari added that Sarawak already has the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in Singapore (STATOS), and the new Singapore Consulate in Kuching will further enhance bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Anwar also voiced his support for the initiative and noted plans for a similar office in Sabah, highlighting that these steps will deepen cooperation between the two countries. — DayakDaily
