KUCHING, Jan 24: Senator Robert Lau is all for the 6pm to 6am curfew in Sibu to help further reduce social movements although the news was confirmed to be fake.

“If the ‘dusk to dawn curfew’ can help, I am all for it,” he said in his Facebook post yesterday (Jan 23).

The Whatsapp message that went viral wrote,” A curfew shall be imposed in Sibu from 6pm tonight (Jan 23) to 6am tomorrow morning (Jan 24) after an emergency meeting this morning.  Announcement will be made later today.”

The message also came with a Mandarin version while ended with a statement “Very reliable sources”.

With regards to this rumour, Lau said he had received several phone calls seeking verification.

His response to the callers was that only Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) has the authority to make such decisions while Sibu divisional levels can only make recommendations.

Later in the evening during the Covid-19 daily update by SDMC, none related to a curfew or movement restrictions on Sibu was announced.

Nonetheless, Lau said one thing he was certain of is to further reduce the movement of Sibuans in order to fight the spread of the virus.

“Traffic movement is down by only 25 per cent since the start of MCO (Movement Control Order) in Sibu one week ago. It should be down further,” said Lau. — DayakDaily
