SIBU, Sept 17: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is contemplating making its annual Water Festival similar to the Songkran Water Festival in Thailand.
The move, according to chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, is to attract tourists to the area, as last year’s edition of the water festival attracted 5,000 visitors.
He said this while officiating at the fifth edition of the Sibujaya Carnival 2023 last night (Sept 16).
Sempurai added that the water festival can also act as a platform for social gatherings for people of all races.
Meanwhile, speaking on the carnival, he believes it can indirectly stimulate the local economy, including allowing residents to be involved in businesses by opening stalls at the Pesta Ria site.
“I hope that this Sibujaya Carnival can leave a positive effect or impact on the residents of Sibujaya and can be held every year with an increase in the quality of organising and livelier events,” he added.
Another activity lined up for the carnival is the Sibujaya Mini Marathon 2023, which he hoped could attract participants from outside Sarawak and become an international marathon in the future.
The carnival will run until October 8, 2023. — DayakDaily
