Sibu MP: No strict enforcement of safety practices on board Triso ferry

Oscar Ling

SIBU, Jan 2: A member of the Parliament who had been using the Triso Ferry on Saturday (Jan 2) alleged that there is no strict enforcement on the use of the ferry service.

Sibu MP, Oscar Ling said from his past experience in using the said ferry that “there was no enforcement, most ferry users don’t know the rules on the ferry, no passengers getting out from the cars while boarding and leaving, and inexperienced drivers might not know that the deck of the ferry is very slippery, so high speed should be prohibited on and off the ferry.”

I have been using the same route going to Kuching from Sibu in the past few months, although I have to go through 2 ferries, it has shortened the distance by nearly 100km compared to normal inland route, ” he said.

The incident on Friday where nine persons lost their lives when their four-wheel-drive plunged into the water at the ferry ramp, he said was a costly lesson where the safety on the ferry shouldn’t be overlooked,

The Public Works Department, Ling said must strictly enforce whatever needs to be enforced on ferries, especially passengers who have to be out of the car when boarding and alighting from the ferry.

“We must all learn from this tragic accident, not only JKR but also ferry users, nobody wants to see such a tragic accident to repeat,” he urged. -DayakDaily
