KUCHING, April 18: A female civil servant in her late 40s from Sibu has fallen victim to an online investment scam, losing approximately RM600,000.
In a statement, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook by a company named ‘XGI Horizontal’, which promised high returns within a short period.
Attracted by these claims, she initiated communication with a supposed representative of the ‘company’ via WhatsApp.
Over time, the victim made multiple transactions totalling approximately RM600,000 to a bank account provided by the suspect.
“The victim realised she had been scammed when the suspect continued to demand further payments, and until the police report was made, she had not received any of the promised returns,” Mancha said.
