Sibu Catholic Parish suspends certain activities as Covid-19 precaution

SIBU, Oct 7: Sacred Heart Cathedral here has implemented strict measures following the spike of Covid-19 cases in the country.

On Oct 6, the number of cases nationwide shot up to 691 from 432 the previous day.

Rector of the church, Father Philip Hu said the Catholic Bishop of Sibu Joseph Hii has decided that all activities in its Parish (except Holy Masses) including BEC gatherings, Home Cell Groups, outreach to longhouses and others which involved big gatherings are to be suspended with immediate effect for 10 days until Oct 16.


Hu said for Holy Masses, strict SOPs must be observed, including social distancing, temperature scanning, wearing of face masks and registration using the MySejahtera app.

The maximum capacity allowed in the church remains at 50 per cent. The church can accommodate up to 3,000 people at one time.

The weekend masses are Saturday Sunset Mass (English), and Sunday 7am (Mandarin), 9am (Iban), 11am (English), 2pm (Iban) and 5.30pm (English).

Hu said the parish office would remain open as usual.

The church has also implemented preventive measures with regards to those returning from outstation.

“Those who have been to Sabah or Peninsular Malaysia for the last 10 days are discouraged from coming to the parish or Laudato Si canteen,” Hu said. — DayakDaily
