Sibu, Bintulu hit triple-digit numbers as Sarawak reports 717 new Covid-19 cases, 2 more deaths

KUCHING, April 23: Covid-19 infections in Sibu and Bintulu climbed into the triple-digit range today with 165 and 162 cases respectively, out of the 717 new cases recorded in 25 districts in Sarawak.

Kuching came in third on the list of daily infections with 57 cases followed by Saratok (45), Meradong (44), Miri (40), Subis (38), Kapit (31), Bukit Mabong (28), Serian and Mukah (27 each), Selangau (15), Sarikei, Kanowit and Matu (5 each), Kabong, Daro, Sri Aman and Beluru (3 rach), Samarahan, Pusa, Lundu, Julau and Lubok Antu (2 each) while Bau has one case.

This brings the total number of positive cases in Sarawak to 26,749, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) revealed in its daily Covid-19 situation update today.

Sarawak also reported two Covid-19 fatalities in Miri and Sibu, as the State’s death toll now stands at 148.

Of the 717 new cases, SDMC explained that 624 were cases under quarantine orders and 53 cases were symptomatic.

A total of 414 cases were close contacts to positive cases while 179 cases were linked to active clusters, 49 cases were detected from other screenings at healthcare facilities, with one imported case from within Malaysia.

Meanwhile, there are 5,759 active cases still isolated and treated in hospitals and Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) throughout Sarawak.

Sarawak also recorded 597 recoveries with 125 patients having been discharged from Sibu Hospital and PKRC Sibu, 113 from PKRC Mukah, 74 from Sarikei Hospital and PKRC Sarikei, 63 from Sarawak General Hospital and PKRC Kuching, 63 from PKRC Sri Aman Prison, 62 from Miri Hospital and PKRC Miri, 27 from Bintulu Hospital and PKRC Bintulu, 26 from Kapit Hospital and PKRC Kapit, 11 from PKRC Serian, 10 from PKRC Betong, four from Sri Aman Hospital and one from Limbang Hospital.

Thus, the total number of recoveries in Sarawak has increased to 20,776 or 77.67 per cent of total positive cases so far. — DayakDaily
