MIRI, Nov 27: A 15-floor mural by Sibu-born artist Jagung at Mercure Hotel Miri, featuring international music icon Jay Chou, is set to become the tallest and largest mural in Sarawak.
Jagung, whose real name is Aries Kong, began the project on Oct 30 and aims to complete the mural by the end of December.
Inspired by Jay Chou, he hopes this mural will provide a platform to showcase local art on the global stage.
“I hope to invite Jay Chou to see this piece. There are two hidden features in the mural that I plan to reveal to him personally,” he shared in a news report by TVS during the Sip & Paint event at the hotel yesterday (Nov 26).
Reflecting on the creative process, Jagung revealed that the mural required about 350 cans of spray paint and 400 litres of illusion paint, pushing the boundaries of street art.
“I started painting by hand and later transitioned to spray paint, which is widely used in street art. This technique allows me to unleash my creativity and think beyond traditional methods,” he said.
While the weather has posed a challenge, Jagung remains determined to complete the mural by December. “This project means a lot to me,” he added.
Jagung also expressed his ultimate dream of filming an episode of Jay Style Trip in Sarawak and collaborating with the artist.
“I hope to sell this piece of art to him. That’s my big aspiration,” he said.
For Jagung, art is more than just creativity; it is a powerful medium for conveying messages, values, and forging a deep connection between the artist and their work.
“This artwork represents my own journey, with elements that tell the story of my personal experiences,” he explained.
From Melbourne to Paris and now Miri, this self-taught 3D mural artist is no stranger to the art scene, having travelled the globe and left his mark with each mural. — DayakDaily
