KUCHING, May 30: Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has received a donation of a microwave from Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.
According to Yii’s statement today, he and Yong had visited the SGH to contribute a new microwave oven after having received requests from families in the palliative ward that there are no suitable microwaves available to heat up non-halal food.
He said that many of the visiting family members who had travelled far could only eat self-prepared food that had turned cold without a viable option of heating it up since the microwaves available are meant for halal food only.
“Therefore, my office also allocated some funds to the cancer ward in SGH to upgrade some of their facilities including installation of curtains and upgrading of existing electrical equipment and other facilities,” said Yii.
To him, in order for the medical staff to work efficiently in providing quality are for patients, SGH must keep up with times in aspects of hardware and software equipment and meet the advanced medical technology indicators especially with SGH being the leading hospital in Sarawak.
The microwave issue in SGH was raised during the recent Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting earlier in May when Yong the pointed out the insensitivity upon learning that only halal food is allowed in the palliative ward in SGH.
Following the raising of the microwave issue, she was challenged by Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian to donate at least 50 microwaves to the SGH in order to address the microwave shortage issue. — DayakDaily
