KUCHING, Feb 10: The Sarawak Cabinet has approved the gazettement of Sungai Tapang as a 7.7-hectare natural reserve, safeguarding its unique limestone formations and plant species in the heart of the city.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Natural Resources, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said the move reflects the State government’s commitment to balancing urban development with environmental conservation.

“Although the area is surrounded by urban development, it contains limestone formations and plant species unique to this location.

“By gazetting it as a natural reserve, we can ensure these species are preserved and protected from encroachment,” he said.

He said this to reporters after the SFC Digital & Green Initiatives event at SFC Office, today.

Len noted that similar gazettements have been approved for other areas, including Bukit Siol and Matang, as part of a wider initiative to expand green spaces and natural reserves across Sarawak.

The Sg Tapang reserve will remain accessible to the public, allowing the community to enjoy its natural beauty while safeguarding its flora.

Strict guidelines have been established to prevent the removal of any plant specimens, ensuring the area is preserved for future generations. — DayakDaily
