“On behalf of the people of Murum, I would like to thank the Sarawak government for its decision not to proceed with its plan to move Sg Asap sub-district’s administration under Sebauh district,” Kennedy told DayakDaily today.

He also thanked the people of Sg Asap for their concern and assured them that he would continue to fight for the Sg Asap sub-district to be upgraded to a full-fledged district and that Tubau would be upgraded to a sub-district to have better amenities.

“At the same time, we will continue to push for both Belaga and Sg Asap to be elevated into a division. These suggestions will be forwarded to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg on his scheduled visit to Sg Asap on February 29,” he said.

Besides Kennedy, Belaga Assemblyman cum Assistant Minister of Utilities (Rural Electricity Supplies) Datuk Liwan Lagang had also voiced concern over the proposal, stating that it would not augur well for the overall development of Belaga area as it housed two major hydroelectric power (HEP) dams, which are in Bakun and Murum.

Liwan had also warned that the move could affect the chances of GPS to defend both Belaga and Murum constituencies in the coming state election.

Besides the two elected representatives, local community leaders had also expressed their strong objection to the government’s proposal.—DayakDaily
