KUCHING, Sept 2: A seven-door wooden longhouse in Belawai was completely burnt down in a fire last night, leaving 56 residents from eight families homeless.
No one was injured in the blaze at Rumah Noh Bin in Kampung Stalon.Â
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre (PGO) received a distress call at 8.06pm and immediately dispatched a team of seven firefighters from Tanjung Manis Bomba station.Â
As there was no road access to the longhouse, it took them about two hours to reach the scene using river transport, crossing sungai Batang Belawai to sungai Stalon.Â
Commanding officer Irwan Abdul reported that they arrived at 10.20pm and could only conduct overhaul works using pumps and water from the villagers’ storage tanks as the river water level has receded.
This is the 12th case of longhouse fires in Sarawak since January this year.  — DayakDaily
