SERIAN, April 14: Kampung Hulu and Kampung Hilir in Serian are in urgent need of retaining walls to prevent riverbank erosions, says Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot Jaem.

“As an MP, I’ll continue to pursue the matter,” Riot told reporters after he officiated at the Berambeh Sungkei Serian 2023 at Serian Community Hall, organised by Serian Islamic Welfare Trust Board (Lakis) last night (April 13).

He raised the issue about two years back, having written letters to Tan Sri Muhyidddin Yassin and later to Datuk Deri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who were both prime ministers at the time.

He added that although there were site visits, the project did not start, possibly due to the change in the federal government.

Riot thanked Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, whom he described as having “attentive ears” to villagers’ plight.

“I wrote to him (Abang Johari) about two months ago, and soon after that, he sent his men for a site inspection,” he said, adding that officers from the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) Serian have also made site visits.

Riot added that he would again write a letter to the federal government after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Kampung Hilir has 211 doors, while Kampung Hulu has 186 doors.

Also present during the event were Serian district officer Lim Hock Meng and Lakis chairman Ustaz Mohammad Amin Dan. — DayakDaily
