MIRI, March 19: A woman here in her 60s,lost RM31,700 to a fraudulent business deal.

The police received a report on the incident on March 17 (Sunday).

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said, the senior citizen had intended to sell scrap metal as a mean of generating additional income.

“The unfortunate event started when she was attracted to an advertisement, which offered to purchase scrap metal in large quantities with attractive prices, on Facebook sometime in February this year,” he said.

“On March 15, the suspect had initiated contact with the victim expressing interest in purchasing the items.”

During their conversations, the suspect had provided the victim with a link for payment in order to seal the deal.

“She was requested to download the designated app onto her device and to log into the app using her online banking username and password,” Alexson stated.

The victim had attempted to make payments as instructed via the mobile app multiple times, but each attempt was purportedly unsuccessful.

“The victim then discovered her savings were missing an amount totaling RM31,700,” he said.
