Senior citizen attending sports meeting sparks Jalan Stadium Negeri Cluster with 17 Covid-19 cases

KUCHING, May 9: Seventeen Covid-19 cases have been detected from a sports association meeting cluster after one of its attendees, a 65-year-old man was tested positive for the virus on May 5.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a statement today said the newly announced Jalan Stadium Negeri Cluster involves a technical meeting of a sports association in Jalan Stadium Petra Jaya here on April 30 which was attended by the senior citizen who is also the index case to this cluster.

“The index case who is Covid-19 Case 33,284 was detected through screening of symptomatic individuals at Petra Jaya Health Clinic on May 3 and confirmed positive for the virus two days later.

“The index case had contracted the infection from the community and had spread the infection to the sports meeting members present that day who then had later spread the infection among the family members of the contacts,” the committee said.

Following an investigation and active case detection (ACD) on all individuals present at the meeting, family members as well as close contacts to the index case, 16 more cases were detected.

“As of 12pm today, a total of 55 individuals have been screened whereby 17 people were tested positive for Covid-19 including the index case while 38 individuals were found to be negative during the first screening.

“All positive cases were referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and admitted to Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) under SGH for isolation and further treatment while a total of 38 close contacts were admitted to the quarantine centre for isolation,” SDMC added.— DayakDaily
