KUCHING, May 8: Construction on the Selangau Mini Sports Complex project will resume after the project was successfully retendered.

Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira explained that the project which started prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, was stopped due to Movement Control Order (MCO).

The initial contract period was for 24 months starting April 2020 and due for completion by April 2022.

“After Covid-19, the contractor declined to continue and appealed to JKR (Public Works Department) Sarawak for mature termination.

“Their reason being that after Covid-19, prices of material had increased by 30 per cent and the initial agreed contract value was not enough to cover it,” Gira told DayakDaily.

Following that, JKR Sarawak agreed to re-tender the project and increased project cost from the initial RM8 million to RM9 million.

According to Gira, the new budget was approved by the Sarawak government and presently, the project is at the retendering stage.

“Once the retendering is completed, the project will resume.

“The new completion date can only be determined after the successful retendering,” said Gira. — DayakDaily
