MIRI, July 19: A local fisherman is missing, while two others were rescued after their fishing boat capsized on Tuesday night (July 18), off Kuala Bakam waters.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation was immediately activated after the relevant agencies were alerted about the incident at 12pm today.
According to a Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesperson when contacted today, huge waves and strong winds caused the boat to capsize around 9pm yesterday while it was enroute to Kampung Siwak Bakam.
Two fishermen—Mohd Firdaus Mustaqim Roly, 35 and Mohammad Azrul Abdullah, 20—were rescued today by other fishermen at about 8.6 nautical miles off Kuala Bakam waters around 2.50pm.
The missing fisherman has been identified as Masni Jana, 60.
Today’s SAR was postponed at 6.20pm and will continue tomorrow.
The SAR involved APM and police personnel.
This is the second boat capsize incident to have been reported in Miri requiring SAR in recent days. A SAR operation was launched yesterday afternoon for a missing man after a boat carrying six people capsized in Sungai Tutoh Hulu Sungai Baram the previous day (July 17). — DayakDaily
