MIRI, Jan 22: A tense search and rescue operation is underway in the dense forests of Long Tungan, Marudi, after a 39-year-old man, David Asang Salo, was reported missing.
The victim, a timber worker, ventured into the wilderness on January 17, and has not been heard from since.
David’s last known activity was cutting timber in a forested area between Selugo Bridge and Long Tungan around 11pm.
His disappearance was initially noticed by a colleague, who reported that David failed to return after his trip into the woods.
The situation has raised alarm, as the region is remote, and communication is difficult.
The case was officially reported to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) on January 21, at 1.50pm.
Immediately, the Marudi Fire Station (BBP Marudi) took action, with the search operation set to commence the following day due to the challenging conditions of the journey.
The site of the incident is located about 280 km from the nearest urban area and can only be reached through a logging road, taking roughly eight to nine hours to travel.
In the early hours of today (Jan 22), a dedicated team of four Bomba personnel, led by Operation Commander Erec Unyi, departed for the location in a Triton vehicle.
Due to the lack of phone signal in the area, the team is bracing for communication challenges as they navigate through thick forest terrain. – DayakDaily
