UPDATE: The body of one of the students, identified as 15-year-old Vilkie Wilson, has been discovered and retrieved by search and rescue personnel as of 11.58am today.

LUNDU, Ayug 21: Around 80 villagers, along with multiple enforcement agencies, are actively involved in the search and rescue (SAR) operation for two missing students after a boat capsized in Sungai Kayan, Kampung Selampit, Lundu, yesterday.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak reported that the villagers mobilised eight boats to assist in the operation, which also included resources from Bomba, the police, marine police, and the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).
On the first day of the SAR operation (Aug 20), the search initially covered a 2km radius on the water surface and was later expanded to 5km, stretching from the upper to the lower reaches of the river near the location where the boat capsized.
Despite the extensive efforts, no signs of the missing students were found. The Bomba scuba team faced challenges as strong water currents prevented them from continuing their diving operations.
However, the Bomba K9 unit, accompanied by cadaver dog Bella, arrived at the scene at 4.38pm to provide additional support.
As daylight waned and visibility dropped due to cloudy weather, the operation was temporarily halted at 5pm.
The boat, which capsized while crossing the river from Kampung Selampit at approximately 6.10am, was carrying around 20 passengers, including 16 students and four adults, as well as a motorcycle.
Of the 16 students, 13 were rescued, while two remain unaccounted for.
The missing students have been identified as Alsma Jithil, 14, and Helena Fasha Petrus, 16, all of whom are students of SMK Senibong.
The search efforts, involving various agencies such as the police, K9 Unit, Drone Unit, Civil Defence Force (APM), SRB, and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), resumed today at 7am, with the Bomba K9 unit and cadaver dog Bella continuing their critical role.
Despite unfavourable conditions, including rainy weather and high tide, the operation is expected to cover a 3km radius as rescuers remain determined to locate the missing students. — DayakDaily
