KUCHING, Sept 20: Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) will be hosting a webinar titled “Biotechnology and Biodiversity Towards A Sustainable High-Tech Nation, Creating Systemic Change to Deliver Value” on Sept 22 at 10am via Zoom.
According to a media release today, the webinar will be delivered by Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) chief executive officer Hazami Habib.
The webinar was initiated following the newly launched National Biotechnology Policy (DBN) 2.0 which focuses on three major areas namely agriculture and food security, healthcare and welfare, as well as industrial and circular economy.
In line with Malaysia’s aspiration to be a high-technology country by 2030, SBC noted that this policy will strengthen the existing biotechnology ecosystem and become a catalyst in solving the country’s challenges related to food security, pandemic management and climate change crisis through local biotechnology solution methods.
To unlock national policies, ASM developed the 10-10 Malaysia Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (MySTIE) to create higher value for biodiversity and biotechnology efforts.
This webinar will provide an overview on the 10-10 MySTIE, 10 technology drivers, 10 socio-economic sectors and the 30 niche areas to be developed in the next five to 10 years.
The webinar will feature pilot projects such as Precision Biodiversity which can be replicated at State level for managing land and biodiversity.
Hazami will also touch on National Planetary Health Action Plan 2030 to drive new innovation in giving solutions to the challenges towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Hazami leads the ASM management that comprises more than 700 science, technology and innovation (STI) experts in Malaysia.
In her years at the academy, she was involved in national and international level studies and programmes such as the National Astronaut Programme, National Science Challenge, Asean, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings related to STI as well as the first, second and third Science and Technology National Policy.
Among ASM flagship studies that she oversees are Mega Science Framework Study, Foresight Study on Malaysia 2050, Science Education Study and Science Outlook.
She was appointed as a member to the Board of Trustees of Yayasan Pintar Negara (YPN) which focuses on designing learning modules for gifted children.
She also chairs the Science, Technology and Innovation Committee in APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (2017-current), and was the secretary for Malaysia in IIASA Council (2014-2019), disciplinary panel for Malaysian Medical Council (2018-current) and council member for Industry4WRD lead by Ministry of International Trade and Industry (2019-current).
