SBA president bags 2022 Sarawak Open ‘Best in Show Award’ with large Buxus bonsai

KUCHING, Feb 25: Sarawak Bonsai Association (SBA) president Johnson Jong has won the Best in Show Award at the 2022 Sarawak Open — Bonsai & Suiseki Championship today.

Thian Hon Sian bagged two grand awards – the Hock Seng Lee Trophy and Most Potential Award, while Felix Chong brought home the Most Creative Award.


Those were the four grand awards in the championship, which is the largest ever bonsai show and competition since 2019, featuring 168 bonsai trees, 20 suiseki and 14 fossils.

Among 18 competing categories, Jong won an additional two silvers and one gold in bonsai, and one merit in suiseki.

Thian, on the other hand, won 10 more prizes consisting of three golds, two silvers, and five bronzes.

2022 Sarawak Open organising chairman cum SBA secretary Hayes Teo secured two golds and one bronze.

Meanwhile, Hock Seng Lee (HSL) executive director Tony Yu, an avid bonsai enthusiast, won a bronze awardnwith his Extra Large Podacarpus.

The prize giving ceremony was officiated by Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos at HSL’s La Promenade Mall this morning.

The bonsai and suiseki exhibition will continue on until Monday (Feb 28) while talks and demonstrations by bonsai masters from Kuching, Miri and Peninsular Malaysia will take place from Feb 26 to 27. — DayakDaily
