KUCHING, July 8: As Hari Raya Aidiladha approaches, a woman from Kampung Samariang Batu can earn up to RM1,000 a day just by selling ‘sarung ketupat’ (woven coconut leaves).

According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), 49-year-old Jumaini Ismail has been selling sarung ketupat at Jalan Samariang for eight years.

Assisted by her family members, she said they were able to produce more than 20,000 sarung ketupat in a day with an income of more than RM1,000 a day.

She stated that she got her weaving materials such as nipah leaves in Santubong by taking a boat because the cost is cheaper than buying from the supplier.

Meanwhile, Dayang Mas Sinti, 55, from Kampung Rampangi, informed that she has been trading sarung ketupat by the roadside for 28 years and is the only source of income for the family every festive season.

She explained that she started business as early as 7.30am and accepted orders online not only during the festive season, but also on normal days. — DayakDaily
