KUCHING, July 16: The highly anticipated media clubhouse proposed for Sarawak’s media practitioners is steadily moving closer to reality.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information, and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol addressed the long-anticipated project, effectively confirming to the press corps that the proposal has neither been forgotten nor swept under the rug.

“Something I owe you guys an explanation because we previously promised—not promised, but we are moving towards it,” he said when speaking at the closing ceremony of the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2026 at the Pullman Hotel here today.

He informed that he had recently consulted with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg regarding the initiative.

He also clarified that the facility is envisioned as a professional “house” rather than a rigid association, aiming to provide a supportive environment where media personnel can work, rest, and connect.

“It is a house where our journalists, reporters, and media practitioners can go to rest, complete with five-star internet penetration.

“It will be a place where you can hang out, unwind, and have a meal, and it will probably include a pool table and maybe even an adjacent pickleball court. That is one of the efforts we plan to carry out,” he added.

The original proposal was first raised by Abdullah during the Organising Committee Appreciation Ceremony in conjunction with the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2025 and the SMeC 2025 held on Aug 14, 2025.

During that initial announcement, it was proposed that the media clubhouse would be established in Kuching.

While a specific street address or building has not been finalised yet, the hub is intended to be located within the capital city to serve as a central, accessible gathering place for the State’s press corps. — DayakDaily
