KUCHING, Oct 18: Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) stands as the State’s foremost centre for healthcare and medical excellence, embodying Sarawak’s commitment to quality, innovation and compassion in public health.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said SGH’s growing reputation in medical research has earned national and international recognition.
“SGH has been certified by the Prime Minister’s Department as Malaysia’s top research hospital for three consecutive years. It was also the first hospital in the Asia Pacific region selected to conduct a ‘first-in-human’ clinical trial for solid cancer under Roche. This shows Sarawak’s capability in medical innovation,” he said.
He attributed the hospital’s success to the dedication of its staff and the unity of Sarawakians who take pride in the institution’s legacy.
“This is not just a hospital for the sick. It is our hospital, our pride, and our community,” he added.
Dr Sim highlighted that SGH is not only the largest hospital in Sarawak but also a symbol of the State’s spirit of service and excellence.
“This hospital has 5,000 people working here and at least 10,000 people coming every day. That is why I said it is the number one hospital in Sarawak,” he said during the Sarawak General Hospital Open Day 2025 at the CRC Auditorium today.
SGH offers care across 80 medical specialities, including 55 sub-specialities, making it the only hospital in Sarawak to provide such comprehensive tertiary services.
“Every year, 62,000 people are admitted, 25,000 operations are performed, and about 10,000 babies are born here. We also see around 360,000 outpatients annually. This shows how vital this hospital is to the people of Kuching and Sarawak,” he said.
He added that about half of Kuching’s population depend on SGH for treatment, including patients from other divisions.
“This is one of the reasons why the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) network is planned to extend to the hospital,” he said.
