KUCHING, June 13: Once described as ‘Breakfast of the Gods’ by the late chef Anthony Bourdain, Sarawak laksa has the potential for global renown.
Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts (MTCP) Sarawak deputy minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, who represented MTCP Sarawak minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah today to launch the Sarawak Gastronomy (Sago) Incubator 2023, stated that in addition to nature and music tourism, the realm of gastronomy presents enormous opportunities for the State’s tourism industry as well.
“The recognition of Kuching as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy confirms the remarkable untapped possibilities within our culinary treasures.
“Just as Thailand’s pad thai and Vietnam’s beef pho have claimed global acclaim, we believe our Sarawak laksa holds the potential for similar recognition.
“Just as Japan boasts ‘sake’ and Korea offers internationally renowned ‘soju’, we aspire our Sarawakian ‘tuak’ to also be embraced worldwide,” Abdul Karim said in his speech which was read by Ting.
He went on to say that Kuching’s recent designation as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy is proof of the city’s rich culinary heritage.
“Today, tourists seek out extraordinary experiences that go beyond landmarks, and they cherish the opportunity to immerse themselves in unique culinary encounters that awaken their senses and create lasting memories.
“As we continue to develop and promote our gastronomic treasures, we strive to position Sarawak as a premier food and tourism destination, inviting visitors from near and far to experience the gastronomic wonders we have to offer,” he added.
Meanwhile, on the Sago Incubator 2023 programme, Abdul Karim emphasised that it is about connections, not just food.
“That is why Sago Incubator 2023 holds immense significance for advancing our State and promoting, preserving, and innovating our rich culinary heritage and gastronomic offerings.
“What sets this programme apart is the remarkable collaboration across all sectors, exemplifying the power of cross-sectoral partnerships.
“I wholeheartedly encourage further collaborative efforts and initiatives of this nature from the public, as the Ministry of Tourism stands ready to support exceptional and groundbreaking endeavours,” he remarked.
Additionally, he noted that by fostering cross-sectoral and cross-disciplinary collaboration, Sarawak will witness the emergence of groundbreaking innovations.
Eleven food and beverage (F&B) enterprises, including Tacos Lengis, Cinde’s Snacks, Goodsos, Suci and Juicy, Ringkat Mama, Boy Manok, 360 Smile, The Rasa, Prez Lasagna, Roselle’s Kitchen, and Aunty V Comfort Food, were selected for the 10-week intensive programme.
As the programme enters its second year, participants will collaborate with renowned chefs, industry leaders, and local producers.
Among others present at the event were Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Sarawak Culinary Heritage and Arts (SCA) chairwoman Datin Donna Drury Wee, and Sago Incubator 2023 organising partner Evelyn Teo. — DayakDaily
