KUCHING, Sept 21: Sarawak’s art scene is evolving alongside the region’s rapid progress in various sectors, highlighting a society advancing not only economically and technologically but also culturally, says Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Ting, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, noted that the increasing appreciation for the arts, alongside the emergence of new works by talented local artists, is helping shape a vibrant artistic landscape in Sarawak.

“The increasing appreciation for art, coupled with creation of new works by talented Sarawakians, is shaping a vibrant artistic landscape.

“Artists like David Chew, along with institutions such as Sarawak Artists Society, Unimas, and UiTM, are leading the way in nurturing this new era for art in Sarawak,” he said at David Chew’s Solo Art Exhibition at Hoan Gallery, La Promenade Mall in Kota Samarahan.

Ting said he also believed that the day will come when arts galleries in Sarawak achieve international recognition, and local art museums become renowned across the region.

“But for this dream to be fully realised, we need our artists. We can build galleries and museums, but it is the work of our artists that will fill these spaces with life, meaning, and beauty,” he added.

Some of the pieces displayed and sold at Davis Chew’s Solo Art Exhibition.

David Chew, a contemporary abstract artist, has returned to the local art scene with his second solo exhibition titled ‘Come Into Your Own’.

The exhibition will be held until Oct 13 at Hoan Gallery, La Promenade Mall in Kota Samarahan. — DayakDaily
