KUCHING, May 28: The Sarawak government is set to roll out a suite of comprehensive green energy policies projected to unlock investment opportunities worth between RM350 billion to RM430 billion and generate around 44,000 new high-value energy sector jobs for Sarawakians.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg shared this during his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today, where he laid out the State’s next steps in accelerating its low-carbon, green economy agenda.

The four policies forming the backbone of this strategy are the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint, Sarawak Energy Transition Policy, and the Sarawak Energy Efficiency Roadmap.

He added that the expected 44,000 high-value energy jobs will open up vast prospects for Sarawakians, as the State positions itself as a hub for emerging technologies and sustainable development.

“These jobs will be generated by new industries, which can boost opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), attract domestic and foreign direct investments, and strengthen our regional and global competitiveness,” said Abang Johari.

In addition, the State is also developing four strategic energy hubs: the Renewable Energy Hub, Natural Gas Hub, Hydrogen Hub, and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Hub.

“Each of these hubs plays a complementary role, working together towards a common and critical objective, ensuring energy security for Sarawak, today and for generations to come,” he said.

Among recent milestones, he cited the successful sail-away of Sarawak’s first methanol export to China and the launch of the Green Methanol Project by Sarawak PetChem as clear signs that the State is moving up the clean energy value chain.

Abang Johari also highlighted the State’s progress in hydrogen-ready infrastructure, including the development of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) facilities, which aim to boost energy efficiency, reinforce power security, and pave the way for future grid interconnections with Sabah and Brunei. –DayakDaily
