KUCHING, June 11: Sarawak’s ambition to establish itself as Southeast Asia’s hub for green energy and a sustainable economy has received strong support from top leaders in Shanghai, China, during a high-level meeting on Tuesday (June 10).
In a TVS news report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, underscored the importance of strategic partnerships with global metropolitan cities such as Shanghai to accelerate the state’s transition towards a green economy and technological advancement.
“Shanghai is not only a global leader in research and development but also plays a pivotal role in innovation, logistics, port operations, and aviation — all of which align closely with Sarawak’s development priorities,” he said following a courtesy call on the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, at a hotel in Shanghai.
During the meeting, Dr Sim also conveyed Sarawak’s intent to explore research collaboration with Fudan University, particularly in the fields of medicine and energy technology development.
Gong, according to Dr Sim, expressed strong support for the collaboration between Shanghai Electric and Sarawak Energy Berhad, describing the partnership as a key move to unlock Sarawak’s vast potential in the renewable energy sector — particularly in solar and green hydrogen.
This initiative, Dr Sim noted, is in line with Sarawak’s broader goal of driving a clean-tech-based economy and solidifying its position as a premier destination for sustainable energy investment.
Dr Sim was accompanied by Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Minister for Utilities (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Dato Ibrahim Baki, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Datu Jafri Lias, Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and acting Consul General of Malaysia in Shanghai, Nur Athira Hani Abdul Rahman. — DayakDaily
