KUCHING, Oct 21: Sarawak’s agricultural sector is embracing modern technology with its first freeze-drying machine, turning local fruits into innovative, value-added products while preserving their natural qualities.
Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated the freeze-dried dabai yoghurt product during the ‘Kempen Lebihkan Buah-Buahan Tempatan’ (Eat More Local Fruits Campaign) at the foyer of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) complex today.

The machine, operated by the Meradong Area Farmers’ Organisation (PPK Meradong), can process various types of fruits, including dabai, bananas, pineapples and durian, in about 24 hours, opening new opportunities to preserve local produce and enhance its commercial value.
With a processing capacity of 10kg, the machine uses freeze-drying technology to process fruits without adding other ingredients, helping retain their natural nutrients, colour and aroma.
A larger machine is also available, capable of drying fruits in about 20 hours, further improving processing efficiency.

The technology transforms fresh agricultural produce into high-quality products while preserving their natural characteristics, with potential to compete in wider markets.
The initiative reflects efforts to explore new ways of processing Sarawak’s agricultural produce, creating innovative products while strengthening the value of local crops.

From fresh fruits to innovative food products, the adoption of freeze-drying technology marks another step towards modernising agriculture and expanding opportunities for local farmers. — DayakDaily
