Sarawak’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin sets new world record at Paris Paralympics, wins gold

KUCHING, Sept 6: Sarawak powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin set a new world record by lifting 234kg in the men’s 72kg final at the Paris Paralympics, securing Malaysia’s second gold medal.

The 25-year-old began his campaign with a lift of 221kg, followed by 226kg in his second attempt, before successfully lifting 234kg on his third attempt.

This achievement surpasses his previous records of 228kg set at the Tokyo Paralympics and 231kg at the 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championship.

Malaysia now boasts two gold medals at the Paris Paralympics, with the first won by shuttler Cheah Liek Hou in the SU5 category on Sept 2. — DayakDaily
