SIBU, March 4: Sarawakians, especially young people, working abroad are urged to come back and build the best workforce for Sibu given the rapid development ongoing with a number of mega projects to be implemented for the next five years.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng emphasised that the next five years will be critical for Sibu as the Sarawak government will focus on the redevelopment programme of Bandar Sibu including Bukit Assek.

“These projects including the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan are a follow up to Sibu’s urban renewal programme.

“Young people should work together with the Sarawak government to develop Sibu like other cities by contributing their expertise, experience and skills,” he said when attending a charity movie screening last night (March 3).

Chieng noted that the slow development in Sibu in the past 10 years had given a negative impression among the community, especially the young people.

“However, I am confident that in the next five years, development in Sibu will be brisk with the implementation of many large-scale construction projects,” he said.

He added that Sarawakians currently abroad should be more sensitive to current developments including the development of their own hometown.

“For those who have migrated, come home. Now Sibu is ‘on its way’ to be developed rapidly and then together let’s help develop Sibu,” he called on.

Meanwhile, the movie screening was jointly organised by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek Branch and SUPP Bukit Assek NewBees which aims to raise funds for the Sibu Autistic Society. — DayakDaily
