KUCHING, Sept 9: The Sarawak government has stressed that any potential security threat to the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, particularly in Bintulu, must be taken seriously and addressed promptly to safeguard the Sarawak’s strategic assets.

According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that he has yet to receive detailed information on the nature of the reported threat beyond what has been shared in the media.

“For Sarawak, we hope the necessary measures will be taken to ensure our assets remain protected should the security threat prove to be real,” he said when met after officiating the 9th International Euro-Asia Civil Engineering Forum (EACEF 2025) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) today.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirmed that a PETRONAS employee in Bintulu had received threats from an unknown individual via SMS, prompting security to be tightened at all PETRONAS LNG facilities.

Police are working closely with PETRONAS to reinforce security measures, with state contingent teams nationwide also placed on alert to ensure the safety of LNG installations remains fully under control.

Yesterday, the media reported that the federal government had directed LNG facilities in Bintulu to immediately strengthen security in response to the incident.

The National Security Council (NSC), in a statement, said the precautionary measure was necessary to facilitate swift investigations.

PETRONAS, in its own statement, assured that operations and supply at the Bintulu LNG complex remain unaffected.

The national oil company emphasised that the safety of its employees, contractors, and surrounding communities is its top priority, stressing that any potential security risk at its facilities is treated with the utmost seriousness. — DayakDaily
