KUCHING, Sept 4: Sarawak has unveiled its Semiconductor Roadmap 2030, a strategic initiative aimed at cementing the state’s position as a regional semiconductor hub and establishing it as the “Silicon Nerve Centre” of Asia by 2030.
According to Information Department and Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news reports, the roadmap was presented by SMD Semiconductor to the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, during an official briefing at Satria Pertiwi Complex today.
The plan is guided by three core principles: leveraging Sarawak’s existing strengths such as renewable energy resources and the Samajaya industrial zone, fostering collaboration between industry and academia, and aligning the roadmap with global market demand.
According to Sarawak Finance Secretary Dato Sri Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, the roadmap provides a clear framework to develop a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem, capable of accelerating Sarawak’s digital economy.
He highlighted Sarawak’s advantages, including green energy resources, investor-friendly policies, and strong public-private sector collaboration, as key drivers of the roadmap’s success.
The Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 aligns with several State policies, including the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), Energy Transition Plan, Gas Roadmap, and Digital Economy Plan, and incorporates SMD Semiconductor’s Beyond Moore’s Law technical strategy.
Sarawak has also strengthened collaborations with semiconductor ecosystems in Penang and the Klang Valley, while contributing to the implementation of the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) led by the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Finance.
Meanwhile, SMD Semiconductor chief executive officer (CEO) Shariman Jamil highlighted that the company’s roadmap has now entered its second phase, following the successful completion of the first phase, which focused on building a strong foundation and nurturing talent over the past two years.
“We are no longer at the research stage we were in when SMD was established two years ago. Back then, we laid the groundwork and developed our talent pipeline.
“Now, the roadmap has progressed to its second phase and will move into the third phase next. This means we are actively advancing on this journey over the next five to six years,” he said.
The roadmap is not merely a planning document, but a comprehensive action plan supported by both State and federal policies to build a sustainable and holistic semiconductor ecosystem over the next five to ten years.
Attendees at the briefing included Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU) director Datu Lester Matthew, Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) secretary-general Dzulkornain Masron, Sarawak Deputy Attorney-General John Wayne Chamberlin Sirau and Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) deputy secretary-general Anieliaa Siam. — DayakDaily
